In November 1998, for example, a division of Hilton Hotels acquired the company that runs Centrebet, a Web and telephone sports-wagering system based in Australia (www.centrebet.com.au).
Finally, the DoJ believes that any federal law must recognize that the Internet is different from other communications media: It’s a multifaceted communications medium that allows for both point-to-point transmission between two parties (like the telephone), as well as the widespread dissemination of information to a vast audience (like a newspaper). Legislation tied to a particular technology may quickly become obsolete and require further amendment.
It’s not because they operate in any fundamentally different way. If, on the other hand, an activity is in the physical world – betting on horses, or casino betting with Indian tribes – it becomes subject to federal criminal sanction when it occurs in cyberspace. One Australian state, Queensland, is already awarding licenses for online gambling, and others may follow soon. The minimum amount to begin an account varies. “We get daily reports, and you’ll see these people who spend a couple of hours gambling, and the total amount they bet is like $1.81,” says Thomas Holmes, Inland’s head of technology. Failure to account for that specificity in legislation could stifle the Internet’s growth or chill its use as a communications tool. His equal partner is Australian tycoon Kerry Packer of the Crown Casino in Victoria. White’s hesitancy suggests that the law may not be as solid as she thought when she indicted.
So how is it that these companies appear to operate legally, but a dozen Caribbean cowboys found themselves under felony indictment?
The prosecutors’ focus on sports bets appears to stem from legal precedent in the law they relied on. (However, an HBO sports program attempted to locate one of these ventures in Aruba, and ultimately found that the genuine server was in a residential neighborhood in Bethlehem, Pa.) And the Caribbean nations would like to keep their haven status. has had little cooperation from any other nation. FBI agents placed bets on games – uniformly National Football League matches, although many other options are available – and followed up, whether they won or lost. The American Gaming Association, a trade group of gaming firms, maintains this view regarding online wagering: “The industry has been state-regulated and we think it should remain that way. “The telephone is being used to facilitate these wagers and I believe the government has a solid case,” explains Tony Cabot, a Las Vegas-based gaming lawyer and author of a book on Internet gaming. Would-be wagerers open an account with a credit card, although some sites also accept cash and cashier’s checks. The Justice Department doesn’t think that online casinos (including those that offer gambling on sports events) can legally conduct business in the United States, even if they are based in places where gambling is legal. According to an analysis by Sue Schieder of Rolling Good Times, the online gambling magazine, the new legislation would not punish the casual bettor.
Similarly, the Las Vegas-based public company American Wagering, owner of Leroy’s Horse and Sports Place in Nevada, also operates a sports gambling site located in Canberra called MegaSports (www.megasports.com.au). “Federal legislation will make it difficult but not impossible for Internet gamblers in the U.S. “And it is possible that records could be subpoenaed of various banks where these companies maintain accounts.”
The amount spent on Internet gambling is harder to calculate. “Ultimately, Internet gambling operators are selling a product. Blackjack players can very easily count cards, or even consult odds charts; the Kennyrogerscasino.com site actually has a printable chart showing the best strategy for every possible hand of blackjack.
Is Microsoft betting too?
The potential action is too compelling for even the largest tech tycoons to resist. . The vast majority of customers will satisfy their demand for commercial gambling through less onerous and risky alternatives, such as lotteries, bingo, pari-mutuels and casinos.”
But over the last several months, at least some traditional casinos have pursued the time-honored strategy of joining an Internet gambling trend that they can’t beat.
That partnership leads many observers to believe that an online casino – using Microsoft platforms, of course – is in the works. At one point, Interactive Gaming looked like it could be an industry leader. 474, introduced into the Senate by Arizona’s John Kyl in 1997 as the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act. “Think about what would happen to Wal-Mart (WMT), General Motors or Microsoft if these companies had to continue to dodge federal roadblocks to access their customers,” says Sebastian Sinclair, senior associate at Christiansen/Cummings Associates, a management consulting firm.
Does the seeming invincibility of online gambling make it an enticing business? Jason Ader of Bear Stearns, urges caution. In a highly publicized March 1998 “raid,” Mary Jo White, the U.S. Packer is a man with a voracious gambling appetite.
One major barrier to profitability is the law. Casino games are available on a site or via downloadable software. He claims Inland’s Internet gambling business went slightly into the black in March, on annualized revenues of about $1 million. Kyl introduced a revised version earlier this year, removing some of the more onerous and hard-to-enforce provisions. attorney for the Southern District of New York, indicted 14 managers of six Internet companies for offering gambling on their sites. Legislators have considered enlisting Internet service providers to patrol for undesirable sites, although Internet gambling insiders consider that m88 sport proposal dead on arrival. The defendants, many of whom live abroad, were threatened with up to five years in prison and $250,000 fines. (The company’s Indian casino and Web-development divisions make more.) “This is the really exciting point, because I know where it goes from here,” Speer said in an interview. In the ’70s, Atlantic City legalized casino gambling; in the ensuing decades, state lotteries, Indian casinos, gaming ships, offtrack betting parlors and card clubs have sprouted across the landscape. Aruba, for one, is refusing to extradite any indicted individuals to the U.S., and thus far the U.S. Inland, for example, operates two Web sites in addition to the one bearing Kenny Rogers’ likeness: Casinoaustralia.com and Goodluckclub.com. Their case is based on the 1961 Wire Act. But following a 1997 indictment, the state of Missouri settled a suit against the company and its president, Michael Simone, for about $35,000. Tony Cabot, an attorney specializing in gaming issues, says flatly, “When you see Kerry Packer get together with Microsoft, you have to believe there is a future for this type of wagering.”
But even if Congress comes up with the best-crafted legislation in history, there are significant factors beyond its control.
First, legislation should treat physical activity and cyberactivity in the same way. That makes for an Internet gambling environment too porous for U.S law enforcement to plug. attorney’s case involved the casinos’ sportsbooks. …
Gambling is as at least as old as Christianity (that is, if Ben Hur can be trusted). The Internet is presently unregulated and we support a federal law regulating Internet gambling.”
Today, Americans spend some $600 billion a year on legal gambling, making it by far the favored national pastime. “Since there are no controls at present regarding Internet wagering, I would urge investors to shun these firms at present,” he says. In 1997, published reports put the total number of operating online casinos at 15. I’ve not had problems being paid.”
Second, legislation should be technology-neutral. Today, a roster on one “gambling portal” site lists well over 200. Says Opel, “Bringing in the big names and established companies only adds credibility and visibility to what we’re already doing.”
Is it legal?
A few hurdles have to be cleared before such ventures can take off – beginning with the federal government. citizens, it will be increasingly tempting for them to turn to locations abroad. For decades, Vegas was about the only legal option for gamblers. But they say the more bettors, the better.
All the sites indicted by the U.S. That figure exaggerates the size of the Internet gambling sector, since some companies operate more than one online betting parlor.
Internet Gambling Worldwide, Past and Future
Although it uses a CryptoLogic template similar to several other online casinos, Kennyrogerscasino.com may be unique in letting bettors wager as little as a penny at a time. But according to Inland CEO Don Speer, elusive profits need not be one of them. Why should it be legal to bet online on a horse race in another state, but not legal to bet on a basketball game in one’s own state? If Native American tribes can establish new, legal, physical places where adults can gamble, why shouldn’t someone be able to do the same in cyberspace?
Running an online casino carries all the usual challenges of Internet businesses, from low click-through rates to servers that fail. If an activity is prohibited in the physical world but not on the Internet, the Internet becomes a safe haven for that criminal activity. About 2,000 years later, Bugsy Siegel took the concept a step further and built the Flamingo Hotel in the desert town of Las Vegas.
Nonetheless, some experts think the case could be made to stick. But the travails associated with fending off lawsuits have essentially put the company out of business. Even the precise number of online casinos is hard to calculate. college and professional sports. And for sports bettors – who make up a majority of online gamblers, according to industry insiders – the ease of using cyberbookies can’t be beat. O’Brien observes in Bad Bet, his comprehensive account of America’s gambling industry, “Judging by dollars spent, gambling is now more popular in America than baseball, the movies and Disneyland combined.”
You might think that the prospect of competing against the likes of Microsoft would terrify a $20 million company like Inland. A Ninemsn spokesperson says that the site does not now offer online gambling and would not comment on future plans. “I use the service because it’s convenient and I have access to it when I want,” says one online gambler.
But a hard-core base will continue to turn to Internet betting for its clear advantages.
More than a year later, however, no cases have come to trial, and nine defendants have accepted plea bargains for state misdemeanor charges with no jail time. attorney’s office theoretically operate out of the Caribbean. But as more and more traditional firms become involved, the consumer will look for the brand name. The Wire Act obviously has no mention of wagering over the Internet.
Prosecutors focus on sports betting
Intriguingly, though, all the bets that make up the U.S. Anyone over the age of 18 can set up an account with Centrebet and place money on a variety of worldwide sporting events, including U.S. As Timothy L. The Standard obtained a Department of Justice analysis of the bill S. Even the firms that have enjoyed some stock-price popularity – such as Youbet.com – have shaky fundamentals. Justice believes that any legislation addressing criminal misuse of computers or computer systems (including the Internet) should have three vital characteristics. That may suggest that, as some legal observers have argued, the 1961 federal Wire Act is too old and too loosely written to prohibit online gambling. Almost all online gambling sites work the same.
Take Interactive Gaming and Communications, another publicly traded company, located in Blue Bell, Pa. They almost always include slots, blackjack and video poker, but many sites carry more exotic games, from baccarat to pai gow. Like the Communications Act passed in the 1930s, technology has now leapfrogged the law. Her higher-ups in the Justice Department appear to agree. In most cases, this means operating out of Australia. Attorney White has proceeded slowly and quietly. Estimates range from $650 million to $1 billion a year, worldwide – a tiny fraction of the amount spent on more traditional formats. Together, these sites have about 4,300 registered customers in 96 countries around the world. For one thing, gambling from one’s home allows for a variety of techniques that would get one tossed out of a regular casino.
But the growing acceptance of online betting and the Internet’s inherent ability to shatter jurisdictions bring the inconsistencies of American gaming law to a boil. Says Sinclair of Christiansen/Cummings: “You are going to feel more comfortable wagering with a Hilton than you will with Joe’s Casino.”
If such gamblers are not satisfied by options available to U.S. One of Microsoft (MSFT)’s less-publicized adventures is Ninemsn, an Australia-based Internet service to which Bill Gates has pledged tens of millions of dollars. In 1998, the Senate passed, by a large margin, an amendment prohibiting Internet gambling, but that bill died before becoming law.
The original version of Kyl’s bill failed most of these tests. The office of U.S. (The company did not respond to repeated requests for an interview.)
Group calls for regulation of Net gambling
For years, another barrier to the growth of Internet gambling has been strong opposition from those most threatened by gambling sites: legal American casinos. “I wager on football games and usually bet in the neighborhood of $1,000 every weekend. In January, MegaSports began taking Internet bets from Australians; it expects soon to allow global gambling on sporting events. to gain access to offshore sites,” says Sebastian Sinclair of Christiansen/Cummings. Passed during the term of crime-fighter Attorney General Robert Kennedy, the law was intended to outlaw betting over telephone lines. Bets generally range from $1 to as much as $300. Nor would it prohibit online fantasy sports leagues, online lotteries in states where they are legal, or online betting on any live horse race where it would otherwise be lawful to wager

If you do lose m88 your money then walkaway, it’s as simple as that. What this is, is a few tips on what to do and what not to do when betting on football accumulators, no guarantees, no 99.9% accuracy nonsense, just things that in my opinion you NEED to know and realise before even attempting to place your bet. I thank you for reading and i hope you found this hub helpful. You can often talk yourself around to the idea of betting on someone else, and in my experience it only leads to disappointment. It’s pointless me betting on the Argentinian league or the Brazilian league as i wouldn’t have a clue what i was doing, So i just normally stick to the English leagues, as it’s easier for me to spot a bet that i think is good value.
BET ON WHAT YOU KNOW
BET FOR ENJOYMENT
When picking your teams it is often easy to just go for a team to win and forget about the other result, a draw. It’s not a way to make an extra income (although it does feel great when you win) If the enjoyment has gone then it only spells trouble.
I make a point of never including my beloved Stoke City in any of my accumulators. Also it’s good to scour the internet to see what people make of a certain bookmakers customer service help lines. I tend to stick with 4 or 5 teams at the most, even then it’s hard enough. Here’s my guide:
If you aren’t enjoying betting on sporting events then you are doing it for the wrong reasons. Gambling to me is a form of entertainment, just like going to the cinema is for other people. The reason for this is i have included them before and they have been the only team to let me down on more than one occasion. I always pick a 4 team accumulator of 4 draws amongst my bets as the odds for a match finishing all square rarely goes below 2/1.
It’s easy to get carried away when filling out your betting slip as you watch the odds rise, sometimes you almost convince yourself that you can’t lose. A pointless bet in my opinion.. They add very little to your overall winnings and there is always the chance that they can let you down and not even win at all. Just because they used to play the game means nothing. It’s easy to have have a blinkered view when it comes to your team.
When betting on football i only bet on teams and leagues that i know about. If you can’t walkaway then you shouldn’t be betting.
KNOW YOUR BOOKMAKERS
If you look through the paper and fancy a certain team then make sure you pick them. Back your own judgement, nobody elses.
Now most online bookmakers will guarantee the best odds so i don’t pay too much attention when i read that. Feel free to leave any comments below.
DON’T LISTEN TO THE “EXPERTS”
Ok so this is an obvious one but it’s so easy to get caught up in the moment. Don’t get sucked in by this as they are just as likely (or unlikely) as everyone else to pick a winning accumulator. The chances are that if you don’t they will win and the team you chose in their place at the last minute will let you down. Go with your initial instinct.
DON’T IGNORE THE DRAW
Now let me start by telling you that this isn’t some great foolproof betting system that never fails as they simply don’t exist. Set yourself a limit before you start betting, a figure that you know you can afford to lose. Also if you don’t fancy a team in the first place then don’t change your mind. When there is money at stake you want to know that you can get hold of the company in question and get the help you require.
So there it is. There are my top 10 tips for gambling on football accumulators. The cold, hard fact is that if you’re betting on accumulators then it’s pretty likely that you’re going to lose, however, if you follow the steps above then i believe you will eliminate some of the most common mistakes made when making your selections. Looking back on it if i was a neutral then i probably wouldn’t have picked them. If you feel the need to bet on quite a few teams then i’d suggest a low stake as the chances of winning are incredibly small.
DON’T ADD TOO MANY TEAMS
DON’T LET THE HEART RULE THE HEAD
DON’T CHANGE YOUR MIND
DON’T ADD TEAMS WHO’S ODDS ARE TOO SHORT
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
If a team is 1/7 to win then i don’t even consider it as there is absolutely no value in them.
Now and again you will see ex footballers giving their advice on who to pick and who to stay clear of. What i pay attention to is their special offers when signing up and what they offer customers on a regular basis
Lesniak believes it is up to the state to determine whether sports gambling can occur and said the wagering will jump-start New Jersey’s sagging gaming revenues.
Voters approved the idea of legal sports betting in 2011 and the following year Christie signed a bill allowing the wagering.
“I’m looking forward to placing the first legal bet in the state of New Jersey on a sporting event next Sunday,” Lesniak said.
But the sports leagues sued, saying it violated a federal ban on the activity in all U.S. the proliferation of state-sponsored and approved sports gambling in Atlantic City casinos and at New Jersey racetracks will cause immediate and irreparable harm” to the sports leagues,” the lawsuit said.
The federal court sided with the leagues, so the state appealed. But given earlier decisions by federal courts, it was critical that we follow a correct and appropriate path to curtail new court challenges and expensive litigation.
The National Football League and other sports leagues filed a lawsuit on Monday in an attempt to block New Jersey from offering legalized wagering on sporting events.. Supreme Court refused to hear the case, leaving the lower court ban in place.
“How can that be determined when Las Vegas is taking bets already, every single day? The NFL has three games at Wembley Stadium (in London) every year where people are betting right across the street from the stadium.”
In calling for the injunction, the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and the NCAA are seeking to block enforcement of a law that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie signed on Friday, which partially repeals a ban on sports wagering in the state.
They claimed that the law violates the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, a 1992 federal ban on state-sponsored sports betting.
“In order to get an injunction, the leagues have to show that they will be irreparably damaged if Monmouth race track starts taking bets on sports sporting events on Sunday,” New Jersey State Sen. But the U.S. Raymond Lesniak told Reuters in a telephone interview.
(Reporting by Steve Ginsburg; editing by Andrew Hay)
The new law allows sports betting at state-licensed casinos and racetracks. Monmouth Park, a thoroughbred race track in Oceanport, is planning to offer sports betting on Sunday.
In a statement Friday after signing the legislation Christie said: “I am a strong proponent of legalized sports wagering in New Jersey. states except four.
“I believe we have found that path in this bipartisan legislative effort,” he added.
“If the 2014 Sports Wagering Law is not declared unlawful..
A winning percentage of 55-percent sure doesn’t sound as sexy as a 60-percent handicapper, but if your volume of plays is high enough, it can certainly be much more profitable.
The 55-percent handicapper is using what is commonly referred to as the Wal-Mart Approach, which is to have a lot of volume with the expectation of grinding out a small profit. At the end of the month, the 55-percent handicapper would have gone 83-67 for a gain of 9.3 units, while the 60-percent handicapper would have gone 18-12 for a profit of 4.8 units, so the 55-percent handicapper has made nearly twice as much.. And as is the case with the Arkansas-based giant, many times this will be more profitable than being extremely selective and doing a small amount of volume, even if the mark-up is higher.
The only statistic that sports bettors should be concerned with is units won, which is the amount of profit, or loss, they have over time, and not worry nearly as much about winning percentage. If somebody were to ask you if you would rather be a 60-percent handicapper or a 55-percent handicapper, which would you choose? The obvious answer is that it’s better to be a 60-percent handicapper, but that isn’t necessarily true.
Making it more difficult for sports bettors is that some sports services will claim to have won 200 units in a particular sport, but don’t mention that they release 10- or 20-unit plays, along with several 100-unit “locks” at the end of the year if things aren’t going so well and they need something to base next year’s advertising on.
With baseball season coming back in about 4 months, many sports gamblers will be seeing ads from different sports services claiming winning percentages of 65-percent for baseball, and that’s entirely possibly, but what the services aren’t saying is that the majority of their selections were favorites of -200 or more, turning that 65-percent handicapping into a losing proposition.
For the bettors that do their own handicapping, however, units won is really the only thing you should be concerned with, as that ultimately is going to translate into the bottom line. In the question above, it would be much better to be a 55-percent handicapper if you were playing 150 games a month, as opposed to a 60-percent handicapper playing one game a day
“It’s as good of [high school] football as there is in the country.”
“Creating all these third parties.
The SEC had banned its coaches from participating in satellite camps, and the NCAA followed with a satellite-camp ban. “I’m saying it’s bad for college football. Now who does that? Now because we have the Power 5, everyone is doing what they want. The integrity of the game.
McElwain obviously would prefer that other schools didn’t recruit in Florida, but he knows that’s not realistic.
After initially saying he would not discuss satellite camps, Saban went off in a five-minute rant that would have made Howard Beale proud, comparing the satellite camps to “the wild, wild West.”
“Someone sponsors the camp, they pay them the money. If they have a prospect, they can have a camp. “By doing what we’re doing now, we’re doing what we do in every other sport that we’re complaining about every day — AAU basketball and all this.
Among other topics Saban touched upon Tuesday, he said he would like to see underclassmen who leave school early have the option of returning after testing their prospects for the NFL draft, similar to what happens in college basketball.
Saban has never been a fan of satellite camps, characterizing them as “ridiculous.”
“It’s bad for college football,” Saban said.
“All the people that say this is creating opportunities for kids, this is all about recruiting,” Saban said. We have to worry about our players doing the right things with the limited time we have them, but we’re not going to do that because we have to be somewhere else to see someone else.”
“Until this satellite camp issue came up, you still had to go to the high school, go through the coach, and players came to your camp if they were interested in learning,” Saban said. There needs to be somebody who looks out for what’s best for the game, not the SEC or the Big Ten or Jim Harbaugh. Then you’re expected to go to that camp and they can use you to promote their camp because Ohio State is coming, Alabama is coming, whoever else is coming.
“If you ask the NFL, ‘How can we maintain trust with our players when you’re giving us inaccurate information?’ their response is, ‘We don’t know enough about the guys to really give you the information, because all we can really go on is film evaluation,’” Saban said at the SEC annual meetings. “I’m not into politics.”
“The coaches, players and people who play it. However, in April the NCAA overturned the ban and ruled that satellite camps would be allowed.
“I don’t have a candidate,” Saban said. And who gets exposed on that? I go to a camp and talk to some guy I don’t know from Adam’s house cat, and he’s representing some kid cause he’s putting a camp on, and then I’m in trouble for talking to this guy.”
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. “That’s what it’s about.
Florida coach Jim McElwain has a unique perspective because 10 of the SEC’s other 13 schools participate in satellite camps in the Sunshine State.
Under current NCAA rules, once underclassmen declare for the NFL draft, they lose their remaining eligibility.
“I’m not blaming Jim Harbaugh,” Saban said.
Saban blasted satellite camps because they incorporate third parties into recruiting and there aren’t any guidelines.
“This is the wild, wild West at its best. Harbaugh can do whatever he wants to do if he thinks that’s what’s best. It’s happening outside the normal evaluation window, which means we’re taking time away from our players. There needs to be a [college football] commissioner.”
Saban also questioned who keeps track of whether players paid for the camps and what, if any, compliance people are involved.
Saban has the opposite viewpoint on satellite camps as Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh, who has embraced them like no other coach.
Saban was asked whom he would want as commissioner.
“Why should we be promoting anybody else’s camp anywhere? All we’re doing is allowing all these other people that we spend all of our time at the NCAA saying you can’t recruit through a third-party person, and that’s exactly what you’re doing.
“Anybody can have a camp now. That’s bigger than all this. We want accurate information when that’s all said and done in December.”
MIRAMAR BEACH, Florida — Alabama coach Nick Saban made one thing crystal clear Tuesday at the SEC spring meetings: He is not a fan of satellite camps.
Saban and Arkansas’ Bret Bielema believe a combine for underclassmen could help solve the problem. It would be similar to pro days for juniors and seniors and would allow NFL scouts to better evaluate those players.
“They should come [to Florida],” McElwain said. There have been no specific guidelines relative to how we’re managing control of this stuff. “That’s why we have a combine and all these other things. But what’s best for the game of college football. What do they do with the money? And who makes sure the kid paid to go to camp?

Up until the late 1980s and early 1990s, collectors were living in a golden age, says Madec – returns of 20 percent in just six months were not unheard of. (See the most valuable cards.)
Rookie cards of players like Mickey Mantle, who typified the golden era of baseball, are always in high demand among older collectors.
The hobby looks like it has rebounded from the doldrums of the 90s, but is there money to be made in collecting Aarons and Ruths?
Cards dating back to the turn of the 20th century that were produced as promotional items for ice cream, candy and tobacco companies are some of the hottest cards on the market right now, according to collectors.
Dealers like Stephen Dickler, who runs SD Trading, located just outside of Philadelphia, says moves such as this could work, but it’s too early to tell. But that was until the card companies tried to get in on the fun. . “The questions are still out there as to whether it will have an impact or not.”
The market has been bouncing back, particularly vintage cards, those that date backs 25 years or more. And in June, Major League Baseball and the players’ association teamed up with card manufacturers Topps and Upper Deck to launch the first ever National Baseball Card Day, giving out 500,000 card packs at hobby shops and retailers nationwide in an effort to promote the hobby.
Even though the hobby struggles to bring young collectors into the fold, there have been some promising signs for baseball card collecting as of late.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Once a year, baseball-card collectors gather for the granddaddy of all sports collectible conventions – the National Sports Collectors Convention.
Take Cal Ripken Jr.’s 1982 Topps rookie card. “Investors just need to hear it’s safe to go back in.”
Andy Madec, a dealer based in Camarillo, Calif., remembers that time vividly.
Most valuable cards
“It’s a tricky thing,” Kelnhofer says. “There’s no guarantee it will happen,” says Dickler. In 1996, the year after Ripken broke Lou Gehrig’s record for number of most consecutive games played, a card in mint condition that had not been professionally appraised would have sold for $90. “This market has incredible potential,” he says. “There’s always buyers and sellers for that material.”
Then there are the cards from the 1970s and 1980s, which predate the card explosion, that some experts like Kelnhofer say could experience the next wave of popularity.
Even in good times, collecting is a tough hobby. “The vintage market is still the place for people to get involved purely from an investment standpoint,” says Kelnhofer. But with Ripken’s achievement faded from the minds of collectors, that same ungraded card would only fetch $40 today.
But there is a lot of fickleness too, says Scott Kelnhofer, editor of Card Trade, the monthly trade journal for the sports collection industry

What’s hot now
Earlier this year, the Major League Baseball Players Association lent their assistance, cutting in half the number of licenses it offers to card manufacturers in an effort to rid the glut of new cards on the market.
Currently underway in Anaheim, Calif., the four-day event will not only be a place for collectors to haggle over the value of their Lou Gehrigs and Jackie Robinsons, there’s bound to be a few collectors who reflect on how the hobby took a nosedive during the 1990s.
“It just got too out of hand,” says Madec, who runs his own firm, Andy Madec Sports Cards Inc. It boils down to a couple of simple principles — how many there are and what kind of condition the card is in.
But many in the industry, like Madec, who is currently attending the National Sports Collectors Convention, is certain that is there is a future for this enduring hobby, despite its setbacks in recent years. Flooding the market with multiple versions of new cards, the manufacturers drove down card values.
In fact, the fabled Honus Wagner card, which was produced by the Sweet Caporal Cigarette Company in 1909, is currently the most expensive card in existence, worth a cool $1.265 million
